japan is following up with their reactors trying to cool down of the fuel rods. they found that the radiation levels it dropped a bit. they are determining how effective it will be. they are able to pump see water with a generator on to it at least two reactors. as far as the overall disaster it the death toll is climbing to 17,000 dead or missing. >>darya: earlier this morning that the japanese prime minister said that he is committed to doing all that is needed to overcome the nuclear crisis. he stressed that this is not the time for pessimism but the danger surrounding the plant is very real. >> the situation is very

grave. in order to overcome this crisis the police, fire department, itself the defense departments are working together putting their lives on the line in a new attempt to resolve the situation. >>darya: in the meantime as we follow japan at the eyes are turning to a power plant and the u.s.. one of their reactors was not working. for 18 months, operators at the diablo canyon nuclear plant near san luis obispo didn't realize that a system to pump water into one of emergency wasn't working. it disabled by the plant's own engineers, according to a report issued thursday on reactors in the united lists 14 recent "near misses" instances in which serious problems at a plant required federal regulators to respond. the report criticizes both plant operators and the nuclear regulatory commission for allowing some known safety issues to fester.
